NGO “Open Data Association” has launched the one-year project “ESG Data & Compliance: Analysis, Verification and Implementation of ESG Data in the Context of European Integration”.
Ukraine is on the path to European integration, which requires adapting legislation, business processes and financial mechanisms to European sustainable development standards. One of the key requirements of the European Union is the implementation of ESG principles (environmental, social and governance standards) in state regulation, corporate governance and the financial sector. At the same time, Ukraine lacks a systemic approach to collecting, analyzing and verifying ESG data, which complicates the integration of these standards into public policy and business practices.
The main problems are the closed and fragmented nature of ESG data, which makes it impossible to assess and use it effectively for financial and regulatory decision-making. Financial institutions and international donors lack tools for independent verification of the ESG compliance of funding recipients, which reduces trust in Ukrainian business and limits opportunities to attract investment. The absence of harmonized reporting standards and open registers creates obstacles to assessing companies’ sustainability, integrating ESG risks into lending and financing, and harmonizing with EU regulatory requirements.
The project aims to analyze existing ESG regulation, identify gaps in the openness of ESG data and develop a methodology for assessing ESG risks, which will enable financial institutions, businesses and public authorities to use this data for transparent decision-making. Particular emphasis is placed on creating mechanisms for independent ESG verification, which will provide international donors and lenders with effective tools for analyzing the sustainability of Ukrainian companies.
The project will help increase the transparency of ESG data, improve state regulation and integrate Ukraine into the European financial space. Opening and standardizing ESG data will make it possible to create a single information ecosystem for assessing companies’ sustainable development, which will help attract international investment and increase the competitiveness of Ukrainian business.
The goal of the project is to ensure the systemic implementation of ESG principles in Ukraine through:
The implementation of the project “ESG Data & Compliance: Analysis, Verification and Implementation of ESG Data in the Context of European Integration” will ensure the systemic implementation of ESG principles in Ukraine by improving access to ESG data, developing a roadmap for an analytical framework and raising stakeholder awareness. As a result, in-depth research into European standards will be conducted, the current state of ESG regulation in Ukraine will be assessed, and a methodology for ESG analysis and scoring will be developed for financial institutions and businesses.
The project will contribute to opening ESG data and creating a methodology for developing a single information and analytical system for public authorities, the financial sector and businesses. This will ensure effective assessment of ESG risks, increase corporate transparency and promote compliance with European standards. A coalition of stakeholders will also be formed, an advocacy plan developed and a series of events held to support ESG reforms.
The project results are expected to contribute to the long-term integration of ESG principles into business practices and state regulation, increase responsible financing and attract international investment. This will allow Ukrainian companies to meet EU requirements, gain access to international financial resources and integrate into the global sustainable economy.
The project is implemented by NGO “Open Data Association” in cooperation with external experts: leading lawyers, financial analysts, business experts and open data specialists. This ensures a high level of expertise and methodological support for the implementation of ESG principles in Ukraine.
Introducing transparent and systemic ESG risk assessment will not only strengthen corporate responsibility but also increase the investment attractiveness of Ukrainian enterprises. The project will lay the foundation for a national ESG compliance system compatible with EU requirements.
The project is a logical continuation of the efforts of NGO “Open Data Association” to promote openness, good governance and a transparent business environment in Ukraine.
